LASER CLADDING

Following the new trends in the field of reconditioning of engine components, our company invested in a new generation robotic laser cladding system.

In technical aspects, the use of laser cladding introduces many advantages with regards to the quality of works performed, the reduction of overall repair time and the costs involved.

The laser cladding technique offers superior overall clad quality, reduced heat input, minimum part distortion and better clad deposition control than traditional weld cladding, such as arc welding and thermal spray methods.

The system we introduce here is ordered in response to the need for a more optimal source and is based on “high power diode laser technology”. Particularly, our laser installation is equipped with a continuous weld pool monitoring unit leading to automatic laser power adjustment during welding.

Compared to the thermal spraying techniques, diode laser cladding forms a true metallurgical bond with the base material. Therefore the adhesion and wear resistance are considerably higher.

The main advantages of the system against arc welding methods are lower heat distortion, reduced dilution (typically <4%), lower porosity (<1%), better surface uniformity and negligible heat affected zone (HAZ) . Additionally, subject properties practically eliminate the need for post – processing and its associated time and costs.

Finally, with diode laser cladding technique, cracking and de-lamination that often follows the arc welding is practically eliminated.

Assistance of the robotic high power diode laser cladding to the marine and petroleum industry, where corrosion resistant coatings are required, is of a paramount importance.

Typical applications of the laser cladding technique are:

  • Four stroke diesel generator pistons reconditioning
  • Hydraulic piston rods, directly exposed to sea water or operating under severe corrosion environment
  • Two stroke diesel engine piston rods reconditioning
  • Cylinder covers reconditioning
  • Two stroke/ Four stroke diesel engine valves/ seats
  • Alternator and motor shaft bearing journals damages reconditioning
  • Turbines related machinery
  • Highly loaded shafts such as propeller shafts, crankshafts, camshafts, crosshead pins
  • Multiple stage pump shafts
  • Cast iron parts
  • Impellers’ repairs (bronze / cast iron)
  • Propeller hubs
  • Rudder stocks
  • Wind turbine shafts

Our company is certified by ABS for the repair of tail shafts by laser cladding.
